Looking for a Fences alternative?
Fences by Stardock is the best-known app for taming a cluttered Windows desktop. It's a good tool, but it solves the problem in one particular way: by organizing your icons into boxes. If what you actually want is a desktop that looks clean, with your files still close at hand, a different approach might suit you better.
Two ways to deal with a messy desktop
Fences: organize the icons
Fences groups your icons into shaded areas on the desktop, called fences. According to Stardock, you can sort files into them automatically with rules, mirror any folder onto the desktop as a "folder portal", roll a fence up to hide what's inside, and tint icons so they stand out less.
Desktop Carpet: cover them
Desktop Carpet leaves your icons exactly where they are and lays a real-looking rug over them. You see the rug, not the mess. When you need a file, lift a corner of the rug with your mouse, grab it, and let the corner drop.

Which one should you pick?
Choose Fences if…
- you keep dozens of shortcuts on the desktop and launch things from there all day,
- you want files sorted automatically by type or name,
- you like seeing everything at a glance, just in neater groups.
Choose Desktop Carpet if…
- you want your desktop to look calm and good, not just organized,
- you save things to the desktop "for now" and don't want to sort them every week,
- you'd like a small bit of joy every time you lift the corner.
And if you only need the icons gone for a screenshot or a presentation, Windows can do that for free: see 5 ways to hide desktop icons on Windows 11 and 10.
How Desktop Carpet works
- Install it on Windows 10 or 11, or on a Mac, and paste your key.
- Pick a rug. It sits on top of your wallpaper, under your windows.
- Drag a corner up to reach your icons, then let go to drop it back.
Your files never move on disk, and the rug only redraws while you move it, so it doesn't slow your computer down. New rugs and packs keep landing in the app, and all of them are free.
